Endometriosis can affect many women and often goes undiagnosed for many years. As many as one out of 10 women who are of childbearing age may be affected by endometriosis. In cases of endometriosis, tissue that is like what is contained inside the uterus can grow outside of the uterus in areas like the ovaries, the intestines, and even other parts of the body. This tissue can behave like uterine tissue and may respond to hormonal changes possibly leading to inflammation and pain. Endometriosis may present with symptoms like chronic pelvic pain, menstrual cramps, irregular periods, and possible infertility challenges.

The Journey to Diagnose Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common condition, but it often takes time to achieve an accurate diagnosis and the road to diagnosis is not always straightforward. Women who exhibit symptoms of endometriosis may need the following workup from their medical provider:

  • Pelvic examination
  • Imaging (ultrasound or MRI)
  • Surgical procedures

Once someone is diagnosed with endometriosis, there are several possible treatments that might help:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Hormonal medications
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Sometimes surgery

In some cases, the surgical procedure that is being done for diagnosis can be quickly turned into surgical treatment at the same time. For some women with endometriosis, stress reduction as well as diet and exercise might be beneficial.

Raising Awareness for Women’s Health

Of course, the information here is not official medical advice, but with my own patients, I offer support and help them seek out specialists if needed. Some women find keeping a symptom journal empowering and beneficial. Endometriosis is a painful condition that can make some women feel isolated, which is why I truly hope awareness is raised for endometriosis.

If you think you may have symptoms of endometriosis or if you’re experiencing chronic pain in any way, schedule an appointment with me, Dr. Maria Swetech at our Clinton Township medical office. You deserve to feel good inside and out.
