Shingles: How to Avoid the Painful Burn and Find Relief

By Dr. Maria Swetech

Shingles is a condition that can develop in individuals who have previously been infected with the chickenpox virus. The Varicella-Zoster virus, which causes chickenpox, remains dormant in the body and can reactivate later as shingles.

When this happens, it typically results in a painful rash, often appearing on just one side of the body in the form of blisters. While the rash most commonly appears on the torso, it can also affect other areas, including the face. Before the rash appears, individuals may experience sensations such as burning, itching, tingling, or other unusual feelings. Shingles can occur for various reasons, but I most commonly see outbreaks in patients with weakened immune systems or those experiencing high levels of stress.

Preventing and treating shingles is possible with a vaccine that can lower the risk, especially for people at higher risk. If you do get shingles, antiviral meds can help make the outbreak shorter and less severe.

Shingles can cause lasting health issues, including chronic nerve pain.
