Underactive and Overcoming: Tackling Hypothyroidism

By Dr. Maria Swetech

Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) is another condition we frequently manage in our family medicine practice. The thyroid is crucial for various aspects of overall health, including metabolism. When its activity falls below normal levels, it can impact many areas of health.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include:

  • Fatigue
  • cold intolerance
  • hair thinning
  • hoarseness
  • dry skin
  • constipation
  • unexplained increases in weight
  • joint pains

A common cause of an underactive thyroid is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. However, other factors, including certain medications, can also contribute to the development of hypothyroidism.

If left untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to serious health complications. Fortunately, with an accurate diagnosis, it is usually easy to manage effectively with medication.

While I can’t offer official medical advice here, if you’re in need of a family medicine physician, feel free to contact our Clinton Township office to schedule an appointment with me, Dr. Maria Swetech. We strive to provide comprehensive, personalized care for all our patients.
